“What a caterpillar calls the end of life, wise men call a butterfly.” – Chinese proverb
For decades now I’ve been telling the story of a 3rd grade teacher who changed my trajectory. Miss Porat patiently showed a sincere personal interest, and gently but steadily worked at building my confidence. She looked beyond the obvious to see potential that at the time I failed to see in myself. That was 1984, Calgary, Alberta, Andrew Davidson Elementary School. Although I haven’t seen her since, her impact has stayed with me to this day!!!
“A teacher affects eternity, for he does not know where his influence ends”
Condolences to her dear friends and family:(
I was saddened today to hear of Karin’s passing several months ago. I am one of the people whose life (and career) were greatly impacted by the kindness, wisdom and practical advice that Karin shared with me. I still to this day carry with me some of her words of advice and tools. Not only was she such a great influence to me, through introductions, her coaching helped some of my friends, spouse and family. She is a butterfly.
Although we had been neighbours for a few years, it wasn’t until recently that we became friends. Over the past two years, Karin hosted the lovely women in our condo building on a couple of occasions – festive luncheons, both of which I had the honour of being included. Karin was a gracious host, a compassionate person, and someone who went out of her way to help others.
I was very sad to hear of her sudden passing. I will miss seeing Karin in the hallway and the thoughtful notes she’d slip under our front door from time to time.
My deepest condolences to Karin’s family during this difficult time.
I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I met Karin 15 years ago and she was always such a kind and thoughtful lady. I always appreciated our conversations and how dedicated she was to her work, friends and family. My sincere condolences.
I’ve known Karin for about 15 years and the first thing that comes to mind when I think of her is “a life well lived”. One of the most unique, kind and caring individuals I have ever met. Although our relationship started as a professional one I can truly say she was a GREAT friend and confidant. Karin…you will be missed!
Andrew and Bruce, I first met your mom in 2000 and we stayed actively connected, we even got together for breakfast when she was in Calgary last fall. She gave me such much help and advice over the years. My life is better for having known her and having had her in it. My thoughts are with the 2 of you right now.
I spent some very meaningful time with Karin on developing a leadership program at Mark Resources. She was a wonderful person to work with, sharing her sage advice and experiences. My condolences to her family.
I worked with Karin for a number of years, always appreciating her sage advice and insight. Rest in peace, your life made a mark in the world.
I met Karin while working at Laricina Energy. She was a very kind and supportive person who cared about those she worked with. I send warm wishes and condolences to the family.
