September 17, 1930 – December 26, 2021
The sun of Jan Hoedeman’s life rose on September 17, 1930 in
Kralingen, Holland and set peacefully after ninety-one years in
Sidney, BC, Canada.
Jan was a man of many opinions and enjoyed challenging conventional
thought. Courage was a companion star that illuminated his life
choices. While still a boy he took many risks to help his family
survive World War II. Newly wed, he and his wife Jane sought a fresh
start in Canada where they helped many of their family and friends immigrate
after them and were blessed with four children. Later he became a
respected university professor while establishing his professional
practice as a landscape architect, realizing projects around the
world. Jan’s life journey was shared with successive spouses Eva and
Giselle which took him from Eastern Canada to Australia, Germany, and
finally Western Canada.
Jan’s legacy is held by the lineage of his family: son Roy (passed),
Max (Bev) and grandchildren Jules and Tegan; daughter Carol (Gaetan) and
grandchildren Isabelle and Teddy; son Jeff (Mary); as well as his many
siblings Ditty, Willy, Kees, Reiny, Jopie, Corry, Lydia, Wim, Frits,
Roelof and Wilhelmina (some of whom have passed) and their families.
He ascended into a world with no pain serenaded by the notes of his
favourite oboe music. May his Everlasting Self be embraced by love as
he travels to the stars. His ashes will be interred in the family
burial plot at Oud Kralingen Cemetery in the Netherlands.
