It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Marlene Joan Massie (nee Hurst). She was born September 24, 1936 and grew up in Brentwood Bay and lived her whole life in Victoria, B.C. She always had wonderful memories of growing up in Brentwood and memories of Sidney too. She had very fond memories of her lifelong friendships that spanned decades including Joan and Sheila and their families with thoughtfulness and caring always as friends together.
Mom passed away on July 2, 2024 at the age of 87 surrounded by her family at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Mom went home to be with the lord after declining health for the past few years and she is now truly at peace.
Marlene was predeceased by her father Ronald Hurst and her mother Elsie Hurst and also her ex husband Craig Massie who was her lifelong friend and father of her children Darren and Deborah.
Marlene was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and great aunt, and a friend to so many people. She was giving, caring, thoughtful, funny, beautiful, and always a cheerleader to us all when we needed it most. She always made occasions extra special and never forgot to call you on your birthday with that “Happy Birthday Song” to always start your special day off just right. She adored her grandchildren Hayley and Nicholas and gave them many special memories growing up of going to the park and the beach which were always her favorite places to be too. Moms favorite place always was to be outside in the fresh air over anything else. She also loved sending her grandchildren funny letters covered in stickers when they were young, that she would then mail to them to make them feel special and give them a laugh. She will be so greatly missed by us all.
Marlene is survived by her children Darren Massie of Monroe Washington and Deborah (Rod) Gardner and their children Hayley (Angel and their dogs Gizmo and BoBo) and Nicholas of Victoria, B.C. Marlene is also survived by one brother Murray (Lauretta) Hurst of 108 Mile Ranch, B.C. and nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Cindy (Wayne) Sandsmark and family of Victoria, B.C., Murray (Tanya) Hurst and family of Duncan, B.C., Jennifer (Paul) Varey and family of Calgary Alberta, and Ian (Marcy) Perry and family of Grande Prairie Alberta.
We love you so very much mom and you are in our hearts forever.
No funeral by request.
In lieu of flowers mom wished for people to give to a charity of their choice.
